Is Melatonin Safe for Dogs? (UK)

Plain melatonin is generally considered to have a wide safety margin in dogs and may be used under veterinary guidance, but the whole product decides the risk. Inactive ingredients — especially xylitol in human products — and your dog’s health and medicines matter as much as the melatonin itself.

Ownership disclosure: This website is owned by Pure Majesty Pets, which sells a melatonin liquid presented as a complementary feed to help maintain calmness in healthy dogs. Read owned-product coverage with that in mind. Full disclosure.
Xylitol is the biggest dangerMany human melatonin gummies contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs (FDA). Read the full ingredient list; if xylitol is present, do not give it.

Side effects and interactions

The most common effect is drowsiness; occasionally digestive upset. Melatonin can interact with sedative medicines, and pregnancy, puppies, senior dogs, and health conditions all change the picture (VCA). These are conversations for your vet.
